CNN is indeed full of it, per usual, and your “understanding” is incorrect as well. First off, because there is no national gun registry there is no way to know who or how many people in America own guns, or how many guns there are.
Best estimates place the number of gun owners in America at about 81 million people; in 2022, about 45 percent of U.S. households had at least one gun in their possession. The total number of guns in America is estimated at 393 to ~420 million, or 120 guns for every 100 people, and over 14 trillion rounds of ammo. That's far more than all the standing armies on the planet.
“Assault weapon”
is just a sensationalized term used by the anti-gun Left and their obedient media mafia, all of whom are ignorant about firearms, civic, history, and the purpose and intent of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. “Assault” is an act that can be performed with a gun or a knife, a rock or a stick, an axe or a hammer, baseball bat, bottle, cane, golf club, golf cart, car, truck, or fisticuffs.
Know this:
Assault is already illegal, yet it happens. Robbery, rape, and murder are all illegal, and yet they still occur with monotonous regularity. More laws will not change this...even if written in all caps.
Also know this:
The entire purpose of the Second Amendment is literally to ensure weapons of war in the hands of the citizens. ALL Americans have the constitutionally guaranteed Right to keep and bear arms — ALL arms, including actual military weapons of war, which the AR-15 is not. No military on Earth uses the AR-15, which is technically a semi-automatic sporting rifle.
