Why does the US fight so strongly against gun laws when there are so many crimes caused by people having easy access to firearms?

I don't like doing this, but I must answer this question with another question.

Why do citizens of countries that use the metric system believe gun laws work in a vacuum? To put it another way, why would gun laws and no other changes to enforcement or policy be enough on their own to stop crime? Because it isn’t in any other country. Is this American exceptionalism I hear so much about?

We have over 20,000 different laws regulating guns in this country. The problem comes from enforcement, or a lack thereof. When weapons charges are plea bargained away, it doesn't much matter what the laws are. When violent offenders, say for murder or rape, are released back into society after 5 years how would more gun regulations or laws help that?

Using a gun to murder or threaten is already against the law. Those kids who use them thusly are already breaking the law by carrying them. What is another law going to do?
