What kind of weapon should I use for self-defense? I am retired, 66 years old, in fairly good health, and camping out throughout the United States. Should I get a 12-gauge shotgun or a handgun?

Gregg Kielma Thoughts

Ok Sandy, here are my thoughts,

If you’re camping throughout the US, then you’ll want to get a shotgun. Pistols are a PITA when it comes to figuring out what’s legal in what jurisdiction.  Please call me or always ask before proceeding to the next state you intend to visit or camp. They’re also ammo specific, and the nearest gun store that stocks your type of ammo may be two towns or away.

I have NEVER been into a gun store that didn’t sell 12 gauge ammo. A 12 gauge is ample to deal with any kind of threat you’ll find in North America. There is nothing that walks or crawls on this continent you can’t kill with it. Sure, you won’t be able to wear it on your hip, but who cares?

If your focus is camping, you’re unlikely to need a quick draw, except perhaps in bear country, and that’s what bear spray is for. As a gun to keep in your truck, which I never recommend a gun unattended, or in your tent to protect you against things that go bump in the night, it’s hard to beat a Mossberg 500 (my home protection choice) or a Remington 870. Get a “do it all” firearm. Stay safe and situationally aware.
