Gun Buybacks Do They Really Work?

What do gun owners think of gun buy-back programs?

Beautiful in theory, like most feel-good stories, in my opinion they do not.
LEO and Antigun groups: “Let’s provide a financial incentive to reduce the number of guns in the street and reduce crime.”
But that’s not what happens. Here’s the reality.
Problem 1.) The amount they’ll pay.
Most buy backs advertise, at most, 200 dollars for firearms and 100 dollars as the usual price. They don’t know just how little they’re actually paying. If we’re talking 100 dollars in 1950s/1960s money, that might be fair market value. But 100 dollars today is a joke. And most of the time it isn’t even cash, it’s a shitty gift card to a grocery store.
But look, firearms are expensive. You can’t even buy a HiPoint for 100 dollars. You expect me to hand over a 700 dollar handgun for 600 dollars less than I paid for it? Not me, never.
Problem 2.) Who they try to target aren’t the ones turning guns in.
Yep, they’re hoping MS13, Bloods, Crips, and Folk Nation show up to turn in their guns. That doesn’t happen. And when it does, they’ve stolen those guns and get ahead an easy 100 dollars.
Before the guns are destroyed, they ensure they aren’t stolen. If they are, the buyback is out 100 dollars and one less destroyed gun. They have to return it to the rightful owner.
You know who turns them in? Law abiding people with guns who don’t know they can get a better deal selling to an FFL.
Problem 3.) What they are trying to get isn’t what they get.
They’re thinking they’ll get those demonic AR-15’s and Glocks off the streets. Well, that’s not usually what gets turned in.
They’re usually broken firearms people don’t care to fix, or are generally inoperable, or bolt action weapons, or a cheap Saturday Night Special they bought in the 1990s and forgot about.
Or, it’s grandpa’s German Luger war trophy he brought home and his grandchildren have no clue how much it’s worth, so they hand it over for a 100-dollar gift card to Best Buy.
What do I think of gun buy backs? They’re a waste of time.
