My thoughts:

To some degree yes. The problem is that it would violate the second amendment. Here’s why:

Suppose you put a tax of $5000 on each firearm a person owns. A lot of people won’t be able to afford that, right?

Now let’s look at the wording of part the second amendment:

“The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

A $5000 tax on firearms is absolutely an infringement on this right. Wealthy people could afford to be armed but your average middle class citizen with a mortgage, car payments, utilities and other bills could probably not afford the tax and so clearly this is a violation of the Constitution.

So as soon as your gun tax passes, which is doubtful, a motion of injunction would stop it until it was decided by the courts. At that point, it dies a swift death.
