In The Know...TSA and Flying with a Firearm

The TSA reports firearms are now a serious concern on airlines.
The TSA reports firearms are now a serious concern on airlines.
Says firearms instructor Gregg Kielma, "please note the rules and regulations traveling with a firearm. It's not TSA, the airline or anyone else responsible for safe carry of a firearm on an aircraft. It's yours. Know the rules and laws for safe transport of a firearm. Kielma continues,
"I get this question asked a lot in my training classes. Can I carry a firearm in an airport? Can I travel with a firearm in my luggage?
Let's, first define "airport carry". Here in Florida, you cannot carry a firearm inside the terminal. Period. If you are transporting a firearm in your checked luggage, call the Airline and TSA, ask the process for the transport of the firearm. Most airlines have the process and procedure posted on their website as well as the TSA.
I still suggest you call, get the agents name, date and time of day you spoke to him or her. Then make your plan. Arrive early for your flight as this process can become long and drawn out.
Kielma also advises, "never, ever, carry a firearm through the TSA Security check point.
Even if it was a mistake, you and your family are going to suffer severe financial penalties, up to and including prison time. Check and double check your carry-on luggage. If you're like me and shoot a lot, keep your personal luggage separate from the cases you take to the range. It's your duty and your responsibility. Don't make the mistake. Your livelihood and reputation are at stake.
Lastly Kielma says,
you can also go directly to the TSA website (below) for the most current and up to date information. Kielma
suggest you print the TSA rules and laws and carry them with you during the entire transport of the firearm. Also know the laws of your final destination. It's your responsibility to be knowledgeable and understand everything associated with safe firearm travel.
Per the TSA:
Nationwide, TSA officers have detected 6,542 firearms at airport security checkpoints in 2022.
This is a significant increase from the 4,432 detected in 2019 (pre pandemic).
Of the guns caught in 2022, approximately 88 percent were loaded!
It’s imperative our local communities thoroughly understand the dangers and penalties associated with illegally flying with a loaded firearm.
It’s imperative air travelers understand how to legally and safely travel with their firearms.
