This is a subtitle for your new post

American gun owners - answer in your own words, why do YOU own a gun? Nothing political here, just asking your experience (British Man Story).

David Grey

In my early 20s my roommate at the time had what I’ll politely call a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. They both fled the house - her for safety, him to avoid reprisal - and about 20 minutes later a well-intentioned lynch mob was in my living room, intent on explaining the merits of chivalry to my roommate. Thankfully they had a good description of what he looked like, and I didn’t fit it, but the lesson was thus:

At any point, a sufficiently motivated person or group of people can smash through a locked door and inflict harm on anyone they choose.

That realization, coupled with the knowledge that I - nor most people - am not a prize fighter that can go hand to hand against a half dozen opponents made me rethink my then anti-gun stance. It also forced me to remember a string of home invasions and serial killings that had taken place in my hometown and claimed the lives of two-family friends. Had so much as a rusty shotgun been present in any of the homes targeted, the lives of both adults and children would’ve been saved.

Also, once I’d stopped being vehemently anti-gun, I learned that when properly handled they’re just damned cool.
