If you conceal carry a semi-auto, do you have a cartridge in the chamber and the safety on, or no cartridge in the chamber?

A round in the chamber, for me I do, for many reasons, the most critical, time and distance says Gregg Kielma, FFL Firearms Instructor and Gunsmith. I have a properly fitted retention holster that fully covers the trigger on my Glock Gen3 19.

The picture above is an everyday carry holster similar to the one I use. Please note: the trigger guard is completely covered.

The ONLY time your gun is going to go off is if the trigger is pulled. Most discharges occur when re-holstering your firearm, and it gets caught on a leather holster, or a piece of clothing gets inside the trigger guard.

As for carrying a round in the chamber. Have you ever tried to unlock your phone for an important call with your fingerprint? How many times did it take you to get it right?

Now imagine you are facing an armed criminal. you draw your gun and “click” OH that’s right, you forgot to rack the slide in the heat of the moment.

Or the criminal sees you, turns…you draw your gun and rack the slide…too bad the criminal didn’t have to rack their slide. Bang, you’re dead before you can get a shot off. The more you must do in the heat of the moment, the more likely things are going to fail, catastrophically.

There is a good chance your gun could misfeed when you are racking the slide, or that you don’t get it pulled all the way back…. there are so many things that can happen when you don’t have seconds to respond.

Practice weekly and be ready to understand every aspect of using your firearm under duress. Seconds count.
