A Manatee County Florida man has been convicted of manslaughter in a 2021 road rage killing.
Nicholas A. Koontz was convicted Thursday for the Oct. 12, 2021 crime.
Says Firearms Instructor Gregg Kielma, a young man is dead, and another young man is going to jail for a very long time. If you take my classes, de-escalation is paramount when armed. Says Kielma, so what, the young man could have cleaned his car in 1 hour. Now he's going to jail. Was it really worth it? Heartbreaking for all involved....
On the date, Koontz and the victim, who did not know one another, were involved in an altercation while driving in west Bradenton Florida.
The victim threw a fast food cup containing ice and soda at Koontz’s car. Koontz followed the victim at a high rate of speed until they came to a stop on a residential street.
When the unarmed victim got out of his vehicle, Koontz shot him several times. A doorbell camera caught the shooting. Koontz claimed the shooting was self-defense.
The crime carries a possible penalty of 30 years in prison.
